But they both received a severe warning from Police before their departure.

The men, aged 25 and 32, reportedly became unruly after Tower Air flight 51 left New York for Puerto Rico on Thursday afternoon.

A source said one of the men punched a passenger who tried to rescue a flight attendant from harassment by the intoxicated pair.

The captain of the plane was granted permission to land in Bermuda where Police and Immigration officials were waiting for the pair.

The men were kept overnight at the Airport Police station .

Yesterday, Police spokesman P.c. Alan Oliver said the men were officially cautioned by Police before being placed on American Airlines' early morning flight to New York.

However, the captain of AA flight 1443 made it clear that he was only taking the pair if they agreed to behave themselves.

P.c. Oliver said: "They were taken with the understanding that at the first sign of trouble, he would turn the plane around.'' Aircraft Services of Bermuda were believed to have covered the costs of the Puerto Ricans' ticket to New York.

P.c. Oliver said Police informed the New York Port Authority Police of the situation.

"That's the last part this Island will play in the incident,'' he added.
