Trio chase second straight wins
matches scheduled.
League champions St. George's and last year's second-best team Western Stars, who played to a draw last weekend at St. John's, will both be looking for their first wins of the season tomorrow as Willow Cuts, Somerset and Bailey's Bay all go in search of second straight victories.
St. George's should stretch their unbeaten record to another match at the expense of Warwick at Wellington Oval, but Stars face tougher opposition when they travel to Sea Breeze Oval to meet unpredictable Cleveland County in one of the day's top matches.
St. George's won all 15 of their league matches last season and have not been beaten since the 1992 season. Veteran El James, who was part of a formidable Warwick team that won the league a decade ago, is the man given the responsibility of rebuilding Warwick.
They have been languishing near the bottom of the standings for the past few years but the win over Social Club last weekend means that there is at least a boost in confidence within their ranks.
The bowlers dominated the opening matches of the season as Arnold Manders of Stars, Cleveland's Johnny Richardson, and Clarkie Trott of Biley's Bay all claimed seven wickets while Shannon Warner of Somerset took six against returning team Nationals and veteran Rodney Fubler five in Cuts' win over St.
David's.
Manders and Richardson showed that spin bowling is still necessary to the success of any team and tomorrow the pair will match up at Sea Breeze Oval where Trott claimed seven with his seam deliveries a week ago against PHC.
Willow Cuts have already shown themselves to be a team to take seriously and tomorrow they should make it two wins in a row when they take on neighbours Somerset Bridge at Royal Naval field.
Richard Basden would have been pleased with his first performance of the season, scoring 60 not out and then claiming one-for-nine from 10 overs.
Southampton, who had a bye a week ago, open their campaign with a home match against a Bailey's Bay side that is still formidable despite the absence of Glenn Smith and Charlie Marshall, two of their key batsmen.
Ricky Hill also missed the opening match but is now back in training and could soon be back to boost their batting.
Another interesting match sees Devonshire Rec taking on St. David's at home.
Neither team managed wins last weekend, Devonshire drawing with Police and St.
David's crashing to Willow Cuts, so both will be keen on maximum points tomorrow.
Police should be favoured over Hamilton Parish at Shelly Bay field while Flatts, who were narrowly beaten by Parish in their opener, take on Nationals in another match that could go either way.
The other match sees PHC taking on Somerset at White Hill field.
Due to the unavailability of several players the benefit match for Clay Smith and Dean Minors, that was to have taken place today at Wellington Oval, has been postponed until later in the season.
The St. George's pair will head to England next week to play for separate teams in the Northumberland League and tomorrow's clash against Warwick will be their last until mid-summer when they are expected to return for Cup Match.
CLARKIE TROTT -- Will be looking to add to his seven wickets when Bailey's Bay play Southampton Rangers.
