Gloomy hotel figures
April's low occupancy figures.
And forecasts for the next three months signal no end to the gloom.
Mr. David Dodwell, president of the Bermuda Hotel Association, expressed dismay at the statistics.
"Regretfully, our hotel industry has not seen the much hoped for turnaround that we need to give us some confidence in the 1992 season.'' April's occupancy level was 56.6 percent -- compared with 59.8 percent last year.
Forecasts for May, June, and July are 69.3 percent, 58.4 percent, and 36.8 percent respectively. These contrast with the 1991 projected levels for the same months -- 74.9 percent, 64.5 percent, and 42.5 percent.
The final occupancy levels last year for these months were 78.9 percent, 83.6 percent and 73.7 percent.
Said Mr. Dodwell: "Upon comparison with the projections two years ago, the impact of the decline is even more noticeable. We are down this year on May, June and July of 1990 by 18.4 percent, 18.3 percent and 26.4 percent respectively.''
