Jerome Bradshaw had to call upon all his experience in order to avoid defeat and move into the third round of the All Bermuda Tennis Club's Open
6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at the Tennis Stadium yesterday.
Skill showing signs that his knee has not fully heeled, the tournament's second seed was made to work for every point by his less experienced opponent before winning through to the next round. He will now face the winner of Brian Way and Sam Maybury.
Meanwhile, the veteran Howard Cross welcomed Bermuda's top youth player Paul York to the `real' world of tennis when he defeated the up and coming player in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
"He likes to play hard ball,'' said Cross, "but I slowed the game down, brought him to the net, lobbed a few here and there to throw him off his game and it worked,'' said Cross.
"It should have been a good lesson for him (York). As Bermuda's top player he has to learn to deal with the slower pace and different tactics through will be used against him by other opponents, young and old.'' In another top match fifth seed Brian Way defeated Eldon Daniels 6-3, 6-4 to set the stage for an intriguing tie against Maybury in the day's top clash tomorrow. Possibly the best game scheduled for today will see Earl Leader facing the "ball hawking'' Sandy Brown.
SAM MAYBURY -- Will take on Brian Way tomorrow
