Prison officers find cannabis in man's sneaker -- claim

A Hamilton Parish man is alleged to have concealed a quantity of what is believed to be cannabis on him -- just minutes after receiving a jail sentence.

A Police spokesman said Prison officers found a plant-like material hidden in the sneaker of the man, moments after he was led from the Supreme Court this week.

Chief Justice Austin Ward had jailed the 37-year-old man for a drugs offence when a routine search in the court holding cell revealed the alleged narcotics.

The man was then taken to Westgate, where Police officers from Somerset station attended to seize the material.

The plant-like material is due to be analysed before any decision on any possible charges are made. A Police investigation is under way. Police praised Prison officers for their diligence in finding the material.
