survey backing pedestrianisation of Reid Street was misleading.

A letter writer in today's Royal Gazette complained about a story on March 30, which said `A majority of Reid Street merchants favour moves to pedestrianise', according to a Chamber (of Commerce) survey.

The writer said: "You have been very seriously misled. Pedestrianisation itself was never raised in the survey at all.'' The writer also said the questions were written in such a way that those polled either had to back anti-car measures or be seen as endorsing the current activities of beggars.

Mr. Sherratt said: "The Chamber of Commerce did the survey, not the Corporation of Hamilton. It's not the same as the one we put out. It makes a lot about the survey being misleading but I think in a way the person who wrote the letter is being misleading because the City of Hamilton plan definitely doesn't call for the pedestrianisation of Lower Reid Street.

"It talks about designating it as a pedestrian priority area.

Pedestrianisation means no traffic at all.'' He said any pro-pedestrian measures would still allow delivery vehicles while any parking lost would be replaced elsewhere.
