And Police are advising members of the public to be on their guard against the trickster, who has already conned several people into parting with cash which he says is for the PALS charity.

Police have received several reports during the past two weeks of the man approaching people in the centre of Hamilton and asking for donations.

A Police spokeswoman said: "Central Division officers are issuing the advice following several reports to Police from members of the public, all of whom report similar stories.

"On February 24 an elderly lady reported she was parking her private car in a car park on Woodbourne Avenue when she was approached by a man who said he was collecting money for PALS.

"He asked her for a donation towards an alleged upcoming fun run and walk.

The woman obliged but later had second thoughts and called the charity to verify the man's story.

"She was told that the charity was not at that time soliciting any such funds.

"A similar solicitation was made to another member of the public a week earlier.

"Police are actively pursuing a number of leads in this investigation. In the meantime members of the public are advised against turning over any monies, especially cash, to anyone who solicits for the PALS charity in such a manner.

"Persons should also treat as suspect anyone who requests that cheques be made out to themselves rather than to the charity involved.'' Anyone who may have information relating to the incidents should contact Dc.
