Mr. Malcolm Southerland, the club's public relations officer, said the decision to participate came after an article in The Royal Gazette stated not enough divers would participate.

The club was scheduled to join in the clean-up but withdrew its commitment due to exams scheduled for its advanced divers.

"We wouldn't want to do a dive like this unless we had at least 30 people,'' he said. "We had an emergency meeting following the piece in the paper and we though it was best that we try and do something about it.'' Mr. Southerland said all those members who did not attend the meeting were contacted by phone and asked to participate.

Clean-up co-chairman Mr. Alex Outerbridge had expressed concern that the Bermuda Regiment's marine battalion and divers and the Bermuda Sub Aqua Club would not be able to participate.

At the time he said it was unfortunate that the club's exams fell on that day and that the Regiment was scheduled to remove the Bailey bridges at the end of the Causeway in St. George's.

Yesterday, however, he expressed his pleasure at the turn of events. "I'm very happy,'' he said. "They've managed to muster up 40 divers.'' Mr. Outerbridge said it was somewhat unfortunate that the divers would be unable to go out as far as he hoped.

Residents are asked to turn out to selected locations at 9 a.m. and help with the clean-up -- Mangrove Bay Public Wharf, Evans Bay Public Wharf, Jews Bay Wharf, Riddell's Bay Public Wharf, Devil's Hole and St. David's Public Wharf.

Divers are especially needed.
