The resignation followed Dr. Arnell's angry exit from a meeting last week at which board members introduced changes to revamp the museum's day-to-day management and public image.

Board chairman Mr. Paul Lesuer last night confirmed the board's acceptance of the resignation. "I will not comment any further on that,'' he said. Dr.

Arnell, who is a past chairman of the museum board, served as a board trustee and as its secretary.

He will continue in his longtime post as editor of the museum's quarterly magazine.
