And, if all goes to plan, the Pembroke middle school will be completed by 2001.

Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott broke the good news to parents, teachers and students gathered for the official opening of the latest, $5 million renovations.

He said a gym would be first on the agenda, to be followed a science block.

The new buildings would compliment new technology, cafeteria and relocated music rooms already finished.

"We have had discussions with senior architects and if budget constraints are overcome during the debate, you can expect work to start on the gym around summer,'' he said.

"It will be completed within nine to 12 months. Then we can begin on the science block by the summer 2000, which will be completed within 12 months.'' Minister Scott was speaking to a packed hall after Government Senate leader Milton Scott had cut the ribbon on behalf of Premier Jennifer Smith.

Later guests were shown around the premises, where several displays of school activities were taking place. In addition wall plaques were unveiled commemorating the Albert E. Nichol Building, Thomas F. Wyatt wing and Charles H. Williams wing.

Alex Scott commended principal Mrs. Carol Bassett, her staff and the students for accommodating the work which had taken place around them.

"We have got great expectations for the young people here, so therefore we undertake to make sure that the hard, difficult days for Dellwood are behind us,'' he said.

He said there was still much to do, including beefing up security and lighting around the school perimeters whilst maintaining a community-based centre.

The whole place is one of the first in Bermuda to be wheelchair friendly, with covered ramps and elevators dotting the site.

Principal Bassett welcomed guests to the opening.

She asked them to celebrate some of the school's accomplishments and hoped that they would be impressed by the improvements.

"This occasion makes history for Bermuda and Dellwood, and the community of Pembroke,'' she said.
