Blazers search for extra artillery
Division champions Dandy Town tomorrow hope to achieve similar success when their league campaign kicks off against Boulevard.
The teams lock horns in the day's glamour contest at St. John's field, starting at 3 p.m. There are also four other First Division games scheduled along with four matches taking place in the Second Division.
Play in the Alliance and Commercial Divisions gets underway today with seven games scheduled in the Alliance Division and eight in the Commercial Division.
Both Dandy Town and Boulevard have had contrasting starts to the season, with Boulevard turning in a somewhat mediocre display in a scoreless draw against a young Somerset Trojans team in the Martonmere Cup opener on Tuesday night.
However, while Boulevard were punchless up front and clearly had their scoring problems on Tuesday, Dandy Town's coach Mark Trott has let it be known that he will not be taking anything for granted this season.
His team captured three major titles last season and Trott realises that everything will have to fall in place for them to enjoy similar success this time around.
"It's going to be a tough act to follow, but looking at my players I know that there is a lot of ability and we have just got to take one day at a time,'' said Trott.
He added: "I will be the first to say that I am not going to admit that we are going to repeat the same standard of last season as far as winning trophies are concerned, but I feel that if we play up to our potential there are trophies that can be won.'' In addition to having been fortunate to retain all of their regular starters, Dandy Town find themselves in the enviable position of having the privilege of being at their home ground for the opener.
But they may be without last season's skipper Lloyd Christopher who was sidelined because of injury on Tuesday and could also be out of action this weekend.
Another concern for the team could be the form of last season's top goal scorer Carlos Smith, who didn't display much spark on the Charity Cup and was substituted after 80 minutes.
With new coach Danvers Seymour at the helm, Boulevard showed some ability during the first half of their Martonmere Cup match-up against the Trojans, but faded completely in the second and need to be more consistent if they plan to sneak a point from the home team.
There is an interesting tie at BAA where the newcomers, strengthened by the transfers of national team players Dwayne (Streaker) Adams and utility player Meshach Wade, take on the might of North Village.
Born and raised at Village, it's hard to envision Adams playing with anyone else and it remains to be seen how effectively he will be able to deal with the pressure of facing his old team-mates.
Based on the performance of their 4-2 win over Devonshire Colts in the Martonmere Cup on Tuesday, North Village should come away with both points.
At Somerset the Trojans are favoured to improve on Tuesday's scoreless draw at the expense of visitors St. George's who will have a new coach in Neil Paynter.
The clash at Frog Lane features two teams who suffered two-goal defeats in their opening matches, Devonshire Colts and Vasco.
Colts, though, did manage two goals of their own in their debut and unless Vasco find the scoring groove they may come out on the short end once again.
The big question at PHC is whether the return of the combined coaching team of Leroy Lewis and Alfred Eve be sufficient to revive the team after key departures such as Wade and the retirement of veteran attacker Sammy Swan.
After narrowly escaping relegation last year the Zebras will want to get off to a solid start to avoid similar struggles later on.
Devonshire Cougars are the second team making its debut among the top flight after being promoted from the Second Division and after major transfers to their ranks, with the likes of forwards Phillip Clarke and Paul Simmons returning to their former stomping grounds at the Den.
PHC are bound to be severely tested, but a draw is the most likely result here as the pair appear evenly matched.
CARLOS SMITH -- Showed little spark in Charity Cup.
