The 95 tents will feature Bermuda-style white roofs and pastel coloured walls, similar to the permanent structures around the Island.

And the specially-designed units, which are being manufactured in California, will have "viewing platforms'' where guests can watch the sea flow by.

Demolition work is due to start on the $11 million resort in the next few weeks, and once that is complete renovations will start on some of the former Canadian Naval buildings.

Public access will be maintained throughout the work, but there may be some restrictions on safety grounds, whilst asbestos is removed from roofs.

It is anticipated the resort will be open by the 2000 season, bringing an innovative environmentally-friendly resort to the Island.

Plans for the resort feature tents -- some over the water -- hotel rooms in some of the former military buildings, plus a central facility with dining and reception areas.
