Championships with a solid performance at the Sunfish Worlds hosted by the Houston Yacht Club.

Smith accumulated 45 points en route to third place in the eight-race series.

His best placing -- fourth -- came during race five, while his worst, a 15th in race three, served as his throw out result.

The event was won by American Jon-Paul Paton, who blasted a strong field that included Bermuda International Race Week champion Donald Martinborough of the Bahamas completely out of the water.

Paton recorded four firsts, a fourth and two sixth place finishes for 19 points, over 24 points clear of countryman Bob Findlay (433 ), his nearest competitor.

Martinborough wound up a disappointing fourth after entering as one of the pre-race favourites. The Bahamian actually tied Smith on 45 points, but the tie-breaker system gave the Bermudian the nod.

This summer has proved an eventful one for Smith, who is also known for his exploits in Snipes. Earlier this year, he finished fourth in the 1992 International Comet Regatta held here in Bermuda.
