Swallows fight back after early fright
WOMEN'SLEAGUE
Swallows A 2 Police Orioles A 1
A match pitting teams at the opposite end of the `A' League saw leaders Swallows struggle to overcome their lowly opponents who got off to a flying start with a deflected goal. It marked the first time Swallows had trailed in a match this season.
However, the leaguer pacesetters hit back with consecutive short corners from which Cath Griffith was unlucky not to convert as both of her efforts hit the post. But the same player then made no mistake from a penalty stroke which levelled the scores.
With the game still tied at the start of the second half, Swallows stepped up the pressure and were rewarded when Griffith again found the target for the game winner.
Ravens A 0 Bluebirds A 1
Despite a fine defensive display in which goalkeeper Leslie Whorrall made some spectacular saves, Ravens were unable to stave off defeat. But the 1-0 loss marked a huge improvement on their previous clash against Bluebirds who on that occasion ran out 5-0 winners.
Swifts A 0 Cardinals A 1
This match came down to a single defensive error in the 21st minute. Cardinals' Maria Pichery ran down the right wing before fooling the Swifts' defence and slipping the ball to Angelika Wilson who tapped home from close range.
Amy Smith on the left wing threatened for Swifts in the first half but despite the tireless work of Stephanie Adderley and Jennifer Beech in midfield, Cardinals were able to hold onto their slender lead.
Swallows B 4 Police Orioles B 1
Swallows struck early with a goal in the first five minutes from Diane Moore and although Orioles quickly equalised, it was left to Moore again to give Swallows a 2-1 half-time lead.
Midfielder Mel Burns kept Swallows in control in the second half and after a fine passing movement Mel O'Brien extended the lead to 3-1. Moore completed the rout and her hat-trick with Swallows' fourth goal.
Ravens B 0 Bluebirds B 0
Ravens dominated much of the match with their defence holding firm and Althea Storrier enjoying a fine performance after returning from a two-month break. But neither team were able to break the deadlock.
Swifts B 0 Cardinals B 2
Swifts' youngsters conceded goals in the fifth and 12th minutes and were never able to recover. However, they did play some attractive hockey with Brittany Farias outstanding in the centre of midfield.
MEN'S LEAGUE
Chameleons 3 Upstarts 1
Upstarts held the early advantage after Keir Savage found the back of the net with a well-struck shot from the right. But this only caused Chameleons to step up their game and in the end they ran out comfortable winners.
Mark Pettingill netted his fifth goal of the season for the equaliser and Chameleons added a second from Jon Dodd during a goalmouth scramble. Defender Chris DePutron then began the move which saw Pettingill and Shabdeen combine to produce a third goal before the interval.
Rebels 1 BCS Panthers 0
An early strike by Simon Farrington who ran through Panthers' defence to fire past outstretched goalkeeper Kevin Hill ultimately settled this contest.
The second half saw Panthers' Nigel Pichery setting up forwards Mike Elton, Jerome Overbee and Andrew Chlebek, who all used their speed to cause problems for the Rebels defence. But the experience of Jamal Burgess and Jason Dennis enabled Rebels to keep a clean sheet.
At the other end Bert Rodney and Farrington both came close to adding to Rebels' tally.
