The officer -- understood not to have been seriously injured -- was treated at the scene by Fire Service paramedics before being taken to hospital.

The accident, which did not involve any other vehicles, happened at Barnes Corner on Saturday afternoon.

One passer-by said: "The bike was lying on its side and the Policeman was on the road being looked after by paramedics.

"The officer was wearing a neck collar -- there didn't appear to be any other vehicles involved.'' Police were last night unable to comment on the incident.
