to smuggle ten pounds of cannabis out of the Caribbean island.

Kelly Lyn Amaral, of Radnor Road, Hamilton Parish, was caught with the drugs at the airport in Montego Bay.

Police in Jamaica said a narcotics sniffer dog had selected Amaral and a false compartment had been found in her luggage.

She was due to leave Jamaica for Toronto on February 12.

But on February 16 she was convicted of possession of cannabis, dealing with cannabis, and attempting to export cannabis.

However news sources in Jamaica said Amaral received a fine of Jamaica $15,000 or three months of "hard labour'' in jail for possession; a fine of Jamaica $32,000 or six months of hard labour for dealing in cannabis; and also fined Jamaica $32,000 or two months of hard labour in jail for exportation of the drug.

The total sum of the fines is the equivalent of US $2,100.

The maximum penalty which Amaral could have faced was 12 months in prison and Jamaica $150,000 or roughly US$4,000.

The sources said Amaral had paid the fines and left Jamaica.

But Police in Bermuda and Jamaica said the 20-year-old was serving a compulsory six months of hard labour in Fort Augusta Women's Correctional Centre.

As a first-time offender, hard labour could mean counselling and general cleaning duties about the prison.
