The 33-year-old man, who has not been named, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, with cuts to his arm and forehead. He was later released.
The man alleged the assault, which took place shortly after 6 a.m. on Parson's Road, was unprovoked.
The alleged attacker, a 45-year-old Pembroke man who is known to the victim, was also taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries received during the struggle.
Central CID are continuing their inquiries.
