UBP Shadow Minister Allan Marshall has called for a Government inquiry into "shocking'' claims that there was wrong-doing and incompetence in an investigation carried out by the Human Rights Commission.

Businessman Harold Darrell made the allegation this week after HRC dismissed his claims of racial discrimination against senior executives at the Bank of Bermuda.

HRC originally told Mr. Darrell, of the Hardell Group, that his case warranted an investigation, but he was later given a letter saying it had been dismissed without merit and without a hearing.

Mr. Darrell said he understood a senior official at the bank contacted the Commission after the bank had made its representation.

Mr. Marshall told the House of Assembly Friday night: "These allegations are very serious indeed because they are directed against the body that is charged with protecting the rights of our citizens in an unbiased manner.

"Government should conduct an inquiry to ensure justice is not only done, it is seen to be done.''
