It emerged earlier this week that a man was posing as a utility repair worker in a bid to access homes and steal cash.

Belco has received about six complaints from people who were approached by the con man.

Police said: "Residents in the central parishes, particularly Paget, are reminded to continue to be vigilant against a man who allegedly poses as a utility repairman to gain access to homes.

"In two cases the man was given access to the interior of the residence while the occupants were home. In the first case, a quantity of cash was reported stolen shortly after he left.

"In the second instance, the occupant kept a close eye on the suspect's movements, and nothing was reported stolen.'' Detectives are linking all the incidents and ask residents to be on their guard.

If a man claiming to be from one of the utilities approaches a home, the residents should demand to see identification.

A Belco spokeswoman said it normally informed residents, either by letter or telephone, if work was to be carried out.

She added: "All of our employees have valid ID cards. If anyone approaches your door, make sure you ask to see it. If people are in any doubt, them they should call our customer services department to verify the caller.''
