Basden keeps Trojans top
Goalkeeper Winslow Williams dealt his team a psychological blow when he gave away the craziest of goals to put Village ahead 15 seconds into the second half, but the Trojans still were able to claw their way from behind twice to earn a share of the points in this First Division game at Somerset on Saturday night.
Williams will probably never make such a blatant misjudgment in his career and it was easy to understand why he was left so angry and disgusted with himself.
Young Village forward Jamal Smith took a shot near the edge of the area, which Williams seemed intent on letting go for a goal kick. But to his surprise the seemingly harmless shot went in off the upright to give Village the lead.
The Trojans, who went into the game in first place, were clearly demoralised for a while. But they were to later regroup and eventually earn a point from a match, which often seemed out of their reach.
It was a hard, interesting game with both teams penetrating deep but each attack lacking finishing ideas when it counted. Village were particularly inadequate up front and had they had more firepower they undoubtedly would have managed to take a lead by the interval.
The best chance for Village came after 12 minutes when left-back Albert Caisey's fierce drive from 18 yards was masterfully tipped over the bar by Williams. But this escape only awoke Somerset who replied two minutes later and caused a Village defender to clear the ball off the goal-line.
With Clinton Caisey always prominent in the middle, Village held the edge for the remainder of the half but their tame attack just could not put the finishing touches to some good approach work.
It was Clinton Caisey who forced Williams to make a good effort to collect a chip from 15 yards after 36 minutes -- this following a blast from 15 yards that he sent over with his left foot.
The home team came into the picture with Kwame Tucker shooting at goalkeeper Cymande Davis and striker Dwight Basden having the misfortune of seeing his blast from close range blocked as it seemed destined for the back of goal.
Village finished off the half in full control, forcing three consecutive corners.
The second half produced a more stimulating game, especially after Village gratefully accepted the gift handed to them by Williams.
Against the run of play in the 56th minute, the Trojans struck back with midfielder Kelly Simmons, during a counter-attack, racing down the right after a through-ball from brother Randy and hammered a shot home from an acute angle.
But the young visitors remained composed, even though centre-half Trevor Dickinson was unlucky for the Trojans when his shot from close range went just wide.
After 65 minutes, Village re-established their one-goal lead when Sean Dill sailed above the defence to firmly head home a Kevin Jennings corner.
Two minutes later Dwight Basden watched in agony as his header was in turn headed off the line by a packed defence.
But Basden was to have the last laugh nine minutes later when he snatched the equaliser after riding two strong tackles to smash the ball home from 15 yards.
Village had a last chance to get the two points they deserved but Dill hurried a left-footed shot well over from just inside the box.
