Academy principal withdraws injunction
Court injunction she obtained last week preventing the school's board of governors, who are refusing to renew her contract, from hiring someone to replace her, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Furious parents of children attending Montessori Academy are now demanding the board of governors give a "full disclosure'' of why they decided not to renew the Irish principal's contract.
Two parents of children attending the school said yesterday the "majority'' of parents wanted Mrs. Fitzgerald to stay on, or were confused as to why she was being let go.
"There is still much sadness, confusion and anger about the manner in which the board, not Mrs. Fitzgerald, has handled the entire situation,'' the group Concerned Parents of Montessori Academy wrote in a letter to be sent to board chairman Mr. John Doidge today.
The group, which circulated a petition last week demanding Mrs. Fitzgerald be reinstated, wrote the explanation was necessary to "restore the stability of the school''.
Parents Mrs. Priscilla Pritchard and Mrs. Gay Robinson said yesterday they did not know why Mrs. Fitzgerald withdrew the injunction, but supported her bid to get it. Mrs. Fitzgerald could not be reached for comment.
The two parents said they were fed up with the board's "insensitivity'' to them and the other 80-odd parents of children at the school.
And they said they were "shocked'' and "disappointed'' to read an anonymous board member's comments in last Thursday's Royal Gazette on why Mrs.
Fitzgerald was being let go -- when the board had refused to tell them at a meeting the night before.
Mrs. Pritchard and Mrs. Robinson added they were appalled at the anonymous board member's comment that parents did not have to keep their kids in the school, which is the only school on the Island that teaches the Montessori method to children up to age 12.
"We are a very intelligent parent group willing to stand up for what we believe in,'' Mrs. Pritchard, a former board member, said. "We are not going to be patronised by an insensitive and arrogant board.'' She said there was a lack of communication with parents on the part of the board. She said it should have been more forthcoming on its reasons for not wanting Mrs. Fitzgerald to stay on as principal.
The anonymous board member told The Royal Gazette last week that Mrs.
Fitzgerald's contract was not being renewed partly because she did not share the board's views on the school's future.
The member said the board could not give parents its reasons for not renewing Mrs. Fitzgerald's contract because lawyers had advised it not to because of the Supreme Court action taken by her.
