take action now to help prevent accidents and injuries.

The Premier, the Hon. Sir John Swan, declared June 4 to June 10 as Hurricane Awareness Week which aims to alert all residents of actions to take before and during a hurricane.

Although it is difficult to predict how many hurricanes could hit the Atlantic Basin and Caribbean, Dr. Ed Rappaport says historical records point to six during the season, which runs to November.

The expert from the National Hurricane Centre, in Miami, said it was reasonable to expect 10 tropical storms of which six could become hurricanes.

"It is not as important to know how many storms there are going to be, it is knowing where the storms will be and how strong they will be that is important,'' added Dr. Rappaport.

Earlier this year, Dr. William Gray, a tropical meteorologist at Colorado State University, estimated that six hurricanes would hit the Atlantic and Caribbean this year, making it the worst hurricane season for five years.

During the awareness week the Emergency Measures Organisation's steering committee, will meet to review its preparation for the hurricane season.

The EMO, which co-ordinates organisations handling preparations for hurricanes, has produced a pamphlet listing general information and advice on how to prepare for the hurricane season. Copies are available at any Post Office.

Last year Bermuda escaped the worst of the hurricanes when they swept safely past the Island. In August Hurricane Chris went by 110 miles east and in November Hurricanes Florence and Gordon also passed by.
