Bermuda set for another US challenge
Bermuda’s new-look senior netball squad will face off against hosts USA during a whirlwind tour of Fort Lauderdale, Florida next month. The two countries will lock horns in a three-match series for the Atlantic Cup to be played over two days indoors at Pompae Park located in Delray Beach. The team depart for Florida on December 6 and will play their opening match the next day. Remaining matches are scheduled for December 8 before the team return the following day.A few changes have been made to Bermuda’s senior netball squad from the one that competed at July’s Americas Federation of Netball Association’s (AFNA) Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.Jadirra Harvey, Jamila Godwin and Kimale Evans have been replaced by veteran duo Gina Benjamin and Nina Webb and promising player Kirstin Saltus.Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) president Tracey Sharrieff said some changes were brought on by player unavailability while others were tactical.“We had to drop some players while others couldn’t make the tour,” she told The Royal Gazette. “We basically looked at the USA team that beat us (at this year’s AFNA Championships) and selected the girls that will give us a better chance against them.”Benjamin should add more potency to the team’s attack, Webb more stability to the team’s defence while Saltus adds versatility.“Gina brings shots that count to the table,” Sharrieff said. “She is one of the leading goalscorers this year who brings experience as far as being able to compete with the players USA have.“Nina brings defensive stability which we lack and has the ability to excel quite a bit off the ground while Kirstin is very versatile. She can play attack, defence and mid-court which is very helpful in case of any injuries or anything like that.”Webb is the mother of Surrey Junior Netball League player Asante Chapman who will travel from the UK to join her Bermuda team-mates in Florida. The last time the senior national squad locked horns with USA at this summer’s AFNA Championships the Americans ran out to a comfortable 68-28 victory. However, with the changes made to the team Sharrieff believes their hosts will have a bigger fight on their hands this time around.“We anticipate a close in the gap if not a win,” she said. “We have to aim for a win, of course, and the girls are serious, committed and definitely excited to be going on another tour.”The tour of Florida is a must for the squad who have to play one more match before the end of the year in order to reclaim International Federation of Netball (IFNA) ranking. Bermuda have not been ranked for several years. The squad, that have trained indoors since July, will again be coached by head coach Anthony Mouchette and his assistant Jene Charles.Bermuda squad: Karen Jones-Simmons (capt), Marissa Wainwright (v-capt), Danielle Raynor, Ebonie Burgess, Asante Chapman, Kajuna Lema, Chaquita Simmons, Arkeita Fubler, Gina Benjamin, Nina Webb, Kirstin Saltus.
