And Government is prepared to impose stiff penalties on errant anglers in a bid to protect certain species of reef fish. Illegal fishing can result in a fine of up to $5,000 and/or a one year prison sentence.

As of Saturday it is prohibited to catch fish in the following three areas: the southwestern area -- enclosed on the northern margin by a line originating at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, running on a bearing of 276 degrees true to the 100 fathom contour and on the southeast margin from Gibbs Hill Lighthouse on a bearing of 23 degrees to the 100 fathom contour line. The eastern area -- enclosed on the northern margin by a line from St. David's Lighthouse on a bearing of 036 degrees to the 100 fathom contour and on the southeast margin from St. David's Lighthouse on a bearing of 065 degrees to the 100 fathom contour line.

The north eastern area -- enclosed on the western margin by a line originating at the southwest corner located seven nautical miles north of St. David's Lighthouse coordinates 32 degrees 28.5 north, 64 degrees 39 west running north to the 100 fathom contour and on the southern margin by a line originating at the southwest corner running on a bearing of 087 degrees to the 100 fathom contour line.

The restrictions, first introduced nine years ago, will last until August 31.
