Cann's double holds Trojans
A goal by Lionel Cann after 60 minutes saved Dandy Town from an embarrassing defeat against the visiting Trojans in this First Division game at St. John's field yesterday.
In a game of many errors neither team were able to distinguish themselves, but the fact that both were fielding many new faces should not be accepted as an excuse.
Often it was the senior players who were sluggish and at fault when things went wrong instead of the youngsters chosen to fill vacancies of players, either through unavailability or injury.
Though strangely inept most of the game Dandy Town did show they had some fighting ability by coming from behind twice to pull level with their more adventurous opponents.
They were forced to play this role early when the visitors took a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes after midfielder Reggie Tucker found Kwame Tucker free on the left flank. The youngster then crossed for ace scorer Rodney Bascome to steer it home from close range.
Cann tormented the Somerset defence with good, tantalising runs down the left wing and put three shots into the side netting. Then after 19 minutes he made a similar run good, this time finishing by hammering the ball home from an angle.
Town followed this up by having Carlos Smith put two shots over and wide from 16 yards, but the Trojans were allowed to gain the initiative for the remainder of the half with centre-half Wayne Campbell screaming at his midfielders to "get into the game.'' With Town unable to overcome a period of shakiness the Trojans pinned them down and goalkeeper Anthony Manders of Dandy Town made a brilliant save to keep out a fine header by Bascome after 32 minutes.
However, five minutes later the Trojans got the go-ahead goal they deserved with Kwame Tucker and Bascome combining before the former tapped the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.
Play deteriorated further in the second half with Dandy Town regulars Stevie Wade, Walter Musson and Carlos Smith giving lacklustre performances and the visitors only doing slightly better.
Kwame Tucker's deflected shot forced Manders to tip the ball over after 50 minutes as Somerset started the second half impressively enough, but that certainly was not a sign of things to come.
As the Trojans struggled to work the ball within shooting range, Dandy Town's attack was virtually non-existent and coach Robert Calderon was forced to make two changes up front -- pulling off both striker Dennis Robinson and Carlos Smith, although some of the more vociferous fans would have preferred to have seen Stevie Wade go off instead of Smith.
Perhaps Wade was saved when he created the equaliser for Cann, his defence-splitting through-ball enabling the fleet-footed youngster to race down the middle and score on a breakaway.
A longer period of dull soccer followed, sandwiched between two fine long-range shots by the hard-working Kelly Simmons in the Somerset midfield that sailed over the bar.
