Opposition MP Gary Pitman said it was time the PLP gave some answers on the devices, which he believed were as addictive as drugs and could cost people thousands of dollars.

He wants them either made illegal or taxed if they were to stay on the Island.

"Gambling is addictive, very similar to the addiction to cocaine or heroin, people get high and live in denial,'' he said. "We don't need these machines in Bermuda. They cause people to lose their jobs and keep parents away from their children. Some can lose $5,000, which they can't afford to do.

"Up and down the Island, it is one big casino.'' The Pembroke West MP warned that if nothing was done, then the Government would need to spend money on counsellors for those affected by the craze.

The Attorney General's Chambers has said it is awaiting a Police report into the machines, before making a final decision on their legality.

Gambling machines During Friday's House of Assembly debate, Mr. Pitman it was time for action.

"They should bring in legislation to make them illegal, if they don't want that, then I recommend that the Minister of Finance taxes these machines. The revenue raised from that will assist some of the individuals who will have dropped out of society.''
