Record number of people on Parliamentary register

Parliamentary Registrar Mrs. Marlene Christopher said 38,149 names, or some 98 percent of all households, were listed on the final Parliamentary register for this year.

Independence referendum.

Parliamentary Registrar Mrs. Marlene Christopher said 38,149 names, or some 98 percent of all households, were listed on the final Parliamentary register for this year.

"The high numbers far exceeded our expectations,'' Mrs. Christopher said.

"We are very pleased with the result.'' However, she reminded the public to make sure their names were included on the register which will be used for the referendum on Independence in August.

"Only those persons listed on it, who are over 18 years old, will be able to vote in the referendum on Independence on August 15,'' Mrs. Christopher said.

"Even though there are a high number of eligible voters registered, it is still important for persons to check the list to make sure they are listed correctly.'' The record registration was attributed to Government's "all-out drive to obtain a total count of eligible voters for the Constituency Boundaries Commission review''.

The Boundaries Commission started meeting last week to redraw the Island's constituencies. The commission was supposed to meet last year, but the session was adjourned in order to get an up to date voters list.
