Oil spill sparks complaints from east end residents

last week's spill are starting to trickle in, Agriculture and Fisheries director Mr. John Barnes said yesterday.

Mr. Barnes said so far two residents had complained about the condition of their docks since the cruise liner Nordic Prince spewed 500 gallons of an oil/water mixture into St. George's Harbour.

Globules of oil washed up onto docks west of Penno's Wharf and in the Stokes Point and Mullet Bay areas. Several boats and yachts were also stained. Mr.

Barnes has advised those who suffered damage to submit claims for clean-up costs to the Nordic Prince's agent, Mr. Llewellyn Peniston of Bermuda Travel Tours.

A second boom had to be deployed on Wednesday morning to absorb a minor amount of oil, believed to have been left over from last Wednesday's spill and sucked out from under Penno's Wharf as a cruise ship was leaving its berth.

Mr. Barnes said Marine Police divers investigated yesterday morning and found no more oil trapped under the wharf.

There was no permanent environmental damage as a result of the spill, Mr.

Barnes has concluded.

The Nordic Prince was fined $8,500 in court last week after admitting polluting the harbour.
