A Police spokeswoman said it was alleged that the girl -- who cannot be named for legal reasons -- had been burned by a curling iron.

Now the Police Community and Juvenile Services Department and the Social Services Department have joined forces to investigate the alleged incident.

She said: "It is a joint effort to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the little girl's injuries.''
