Marshall in thick of NCAA title challenge
her US university's bid to clinch the NCAA Women's Championship in West Linn, Oregon.
In Monday's first round, Marshall fired a three over par 76 at the 5,895- yard Oregon Golf Club to help push Wake Forest into third place on the opening day.
Her team-mates Stephanie Neill and Laura Philo both carded even par 73s. Wake Forest trailed early leaders Southern California by five shots and second-placed Arizona by two shots.
Marshall, a sophomore at the North Carolina university, will be back on the Island next month to defend her Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay title and attempt to cement her place in the women's team which will represent Bermuda at the World Amateur Team Championships in France.
Defending men's champion Duncan Zelkin is also expected to return from Jacksonville State University to defend his men's title. And he too will be aiming for a berth on the men's team travelling to France in October.
Scott Mayne, winner of this year's Match Play title, Robert Vallis and Henry Ascento will be seen as Zelkin's main challengers.
Entries for the Amateur, which runs from June 17 to June 20 at Port Royal, close on June 3.
Play in the Amstel Golf League gets underway a week on Saturday.
The A division will start at Ocean View and the B division at Belmont.
Club captains are reminded that their teams of six should be called into BGA secretary Tom Smith (238-1367) before 6.00 p.m. next Tuesday.
