Burch, who on Wednesday appeared to call for the resignation of his successor as the Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment.

She said: "I would think that anyone, approaching the problems that have to date been highlighted concerning the Bermuda Regiment, with an open mind would welcome the comments of the former Commanding Officer under whose tenure Bermuda enjoyed a season of unconflicted service being given, but also, in the words of those who were so serving, a term of if not racial harmony, certainly a greater understanding of different classes, different ethnic backgrounds were created under a very innovative, creative and strong leadership.

"And that is not my opinion. That is fact as evidenced by the period of his tenure and those people who came through under his leadership.

"I would further state that while not being aware of the inner workings of the Regiment, I have had representation made to me (by members of the Regiment) and that representation has been passed on to the Commander and Chief (Governor).

"And I would note that when representation was made to me I was quite concerned, having been aware that members in a disciplined service do not reveal any challenges they might be facing internally, outside of that hallowed environment, unless they believe there is no other way which they can be heard.

"That particular circumstance should be of concern to all who have felt comforted by the fact that in times of either internal unrest or great challenge, such as during hurricanes, that this body that has served Bermuda so well for so long following the amalgamation of the BMA (Bermuda Militia Artillery) and the Bermuda Rifles now seems to be experiencing problems.

"And I would think that we would want all necessary steps to be taken to see that those problems or difficulties are resolved.'' Ms Smith also stressed that she did not think it was her "responsibility or right'' to meet personally with Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Patrick Outerbridge about the issue.

Instead, she said, she went to the Governor.
