Mr. King did not conclude the inquest of 76-year-old Warren Simons, after ruling that there was enough basis for a death certificate to be signed and an inquest was not the correct forum for an inquiry into the man's death.

Mr. Simons died in October 1998, whilst in King Edward VII Hospital, following two routine operations.

The cause of death recorded by the pathologist was haemorrhaging with shock.

Yesterday, following a hearing that lasted 90 minutes, Mr. King decided not to proceed with the inquest and dispensed with it under Section 9.2 of the Coroner's Act.

Barclay Simmons, of lawyers Attride, Stirling and Woloniecki, represented the family of Mr. Simons. He said he could not comment.
