Red Stripe game for Francis
Umpire's Association to assist in a three-day Red Stripe trials match next month.
Jamaican association president Johnnie Gayle witnessed Francis performing duties in the Caribbean island back in March along with fellow local Randy Butler, and thus impressed, invited him for a return visit.
Francis is due to operate alongside top class West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor, who has officiated in various Test Matches and one day internationals throughout the world, including this year's World Cup jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
"It's a great feeling to get this opportunity,'' said Francis. "I can learn a lot from him and I definitely look forward to it.'' The match to which Francis has been assigned will involve select teams of players seeking to advance to represent Jamaica in the annual Red Stripe competition.
This year has seen Francis accomplish a few firsts. In addition to the aforementioned trip he also participated in his first Cup Match along with Dennis Raynor.
He is one of ten Bermudians that have achieved the full umpiring certificate, having passed the West Indies written in 1989 on his third attempt and scoring top marks on the oral and practical portion a year later.
"This can lead to big things for me and other umpires,'' said Francis, who took up umpiring seven years ago after his playing days were over. "It's putting Bermuda on the umpiring map.'' Bermuda Cricket Board of Control president Ed Bailey said that the Board was equally delighted with the advances being made and that is was all for the betterment of the sport locally.
