$250,000 to Saltus for a new senior school library.

The new complex, to be housed in the school's former science lecture hall, will bear the name of the Saltus Old Boy.

Saltus headmaster Trevor Rowell said the Dudley G. Butterfield Library Research Centre will be "one of the Island's best facilities, utilising computer-based CD-ROM and Internet connections to supplement traditional library sources''.

The modern, air-conditioned library will also feature four carpeted levels, state-of-the-art IBM and Macintosh computer carrels, TV monitors for viewing educational videos, and an extensive array of electronic data retrieval systems to connect students with libraries around the world.

"We aim to be a world-class school and an improved library is central to our aspirations,'' Mr. Rowell said. "Taking advantage of the information highway via computers is especially critical because of our Island setting.

"Thanks to Mr. Butterfield's generosity, we may now embark on a truly exciting adventure by establishing what we hope will be the best school library in Bermuda.'' Mr. Butterfield's family is closely connected to Saltus. His father, sons and grandsons all attended the school.

His gift brings the Saltus Appeal campaign, headed by businessman and Saltus Old Boy Fernance Perry, to $2.2 million.
