And he revealed the Citizens for a Better Democracy group is now planning to start an Island-wide petition in a bid to put more pressure on Government to hold a referendum.

At a Press conference held yesterday by the group, Mr. Perinchief once more stressed that the Island is a tax haven -- and that Bermuda's economy would be at risk should the terms of the recent White Paper be accepted.

"If someone has a right of abode and a right to UK citizenship, to take part in an Independence referendum seems to be rather biased,'' Mr. Perinchief said.

Mr. Perinchief added that if such a restriction was imposed mainly white people would be disqualified because of their eligibility to citizenship through parentage.
