Bean, Jones get second chance

will get another shot at Mixed Doubles play in the All Bermuda Tennis Club's Open International Tournament.

Bean was forced to opt out of yesterday's clash at the last minute against top seeds Donna Bradshaw and Mike Curry when he was called on for some extra work at his school.

After some discussion and juggling of the schedule, the match was rescheduled for tonight at 6 p.m.

The day's top match saw unseeded John Sharpe stretch top seed Oliver Bain to the limit before going down 7-6 (6-4), 7-6 (7-5) in the Men's B Division.

Bain must have thought it was all over when he led 5-4 and was up love-30 on Sharpe's service, only to have Sharpe roar back to win at deuce. Bain had another chance in the tiebreak when he ran off three straight points for a 6-3 lead before Sharpe saved two match points. But Bain, with a great first serve, won his third match point forcing Sharpe deep to the backhand court. That left an easy forehand slice deep into the open forehand court for the game, set and match.

In the meantime, Mark Ward and Mark Cordeiro moved into the finals of the Men's Open Doubles when they defeated Mark Melvin and James Thomas 6-2, 6-2.

Fourth seed Ian Chalmers upset second seed Eugene Simmons in the Men's B Singles winning 6-4, 7-5.
