after blaming her fall on loose gravel from newly-installed road markings.

The 26-year-old, who wished to remain nameless, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Wednesday night after she fell off her bike near the Olympic Club in Dundonald Street when she went over the red arrow markings.

She said: "I wasn't speeding. I had slowed down for the speed bump.

"I couldn't understand what had happened so I asked people around me. They said I wasn't speeding but I had slipped on the gravel.

"There was gravel all over the place. They were down there today sweeping it all up.'' She said she had contacted the Corporation of Hamilton over the matter, noting: "I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else.'' Corporation of Hamilton Secretary Roger Sherratt said the matter was being investigated.

But he was surprised there was a problem with the markings which were put down at the weekend.

He said: "The red arrows are made of a special material designed to provide extra traction for vehicles.

"They are designed to work in difficult places such as the bottom of hills or on dangerous bends. It's supposed to be good material. This material is used in Point Finger Road and Berry Hill Road.

"We are looking to see if some gravel appears to have come loose.

"We are very concerned to think that this material might have caused or contributed to this accident. It was a nasty injury.'' Gravel situation: Works crews were busy sweeping up loose gravel yesterday on Dundonald Street after a cyclist fell on freshly-installed red traffic triangles.
