Early goals give Village victory

Two first half goals by Elliott Jennings and Jamel Smith gave North Village a victory they fully deserved in this Dudley Eve Trophy opener at Devonshire Rec. last night.

Jennings, who missed two sitters, netted Village's first after three minutes while Smith added the second after 28 minutes.

Colts' lone reply was a sizzler, scored by college student Quincy Aberdeen who is home for the Christmas holidays.

Impressive was how both teams managed to master the slippery conditions on a night which saw many fans stay away, most likely in fear of further rainshowers that had affected the Island throughout the day.

But in the struggle for supremacy it was Village who came away with the honours -- stamping their authority as early as the first 30 seconds when Elliott Jennings astonishingly put his shot wide from 13 yards with all the time in the world.

However, the hard-working Village striker made amends for that miss shortly afterwards. Midfielder Nakia Smith raced down the right flank and watched with delight as his accurate cross was easily headed home by Jennings from close range.

That goal forced Colts to push forward but all they could manage was a couple of tame headers by Mark Ray which goalkeeper Gladwin Edness dealt with easily.

Village went further ahead when Jamel Smith scored from a rebound after a 18-yard blast by Jameiko Jennings had been slapped away by Troy Hall in the Colts goal.

Village continued to pressure last year's beaten finalists with Lionel Cann coming close on two occasions, putting one shot into the side-netting and watching in amazement as a header bounced off the chest of goalkeeper Hall.

But during a quick counter attack Aberdeen came up with the goal of the game when he brilliantly beat midfielder Nakia Smith with a fine move and as the Village player lay sprawled on the ground, he hammered home a blistering drive from 22 yards.

Play was less exciting in the second half as Colts were unable to make the most of their chances.

Another Jennings miss came after 68 minutes when he tried to place a cross from Cann only to see Hall save a tame shot from just a couple of yards out.
