Bermuda featured in prestigious catalogue
dedicated 19 pages to Bermuda and its cultural clothing legacy, Bermuda shorts.
The seasonal publication -- which is distributed to some 155 million readers in the $50,000-and-up income bracket throughout North America, approached the Tourism Department about using the Island in its summer issue earlier this year, tourism spokesman Mr. Charles Webbe said.
Representatives and photo teams visited the Island from February 25 through March 5 to gather information and photographs contained.
The magazine features some of the Island's most picturesque locations with many models sporting Bermuda shorts.
Captions designed to lure visitors appear under each photograph.
There is also a two-page spread on the history of Bermuda shorts by American author Mr. Bill Brasher.
In Mr. Brasher's rendition of how Bermuda shorts came to be a local and overseas symbol, Mr. Andrew Trimingham explains the dos and don'ts of wearing Bermuda shorts.
The issue entitled "Bound For Bermuda Land of Shorts'' promotes the Island's weather as well as local sights.
Each photograph depicts the history of its location and architectural features.
There are also photographs of people riding mopeds and a look at local fruits.
The back cover of the magazine carries a photograph of morning traffic greeter Mr. Johnny Barnes.
"Lands End is a very prestigious catalogue and this issue has done a lot to help us to become more exposed to the type of visitor that we have been trying to get here,'' said Mr. Webbe.
"The Department of Tourism had very little to do with the actual process.
Although we did assist the magazine with information about Bermuda and with transportation around the Island.
"The Bermudians featured as models and spokespersons were picked randomly as the crew travelled around the Island.
"The idea to combine the theme of Bermuda's national dress with the Bermuda Island destination campaign does a lot in the way of bringing Bermuda into the spotlight overseas,'' said Mr. Webbe.
