Girl Guides plan world-class bash
Guide Association intends to celebrate it with the world.
The association revealed it will host an International Camp between July 3 and 11.
It will be the second time that Bermuda has played host to an International Girl Guide Camp. The first camp was held 30 years ago in 1969 during the 50th anniversary of girl guiding in Bermuda.
BGGA commissioner Lynne Cann said the organisation is expecting at least 14 countries from an original list of 20 countries to attend the camp.
Delegations from the Caribbean, Belarus, Belgium and Gibraltar will be amongst the groups that will attend, with the largest delegations expected to come from the US, Canada and Great Britain.
The local girl guide organisation is comprised of some 600 girls ranging in age from seven years to ten years, while older membership has dropped off.
"Many young people do not see the merit of girl guiding. It helps young women to think for themselves. Guiding will provide for survival skills and international exposure.'' She added: "They are taught service to the community as well as leadership and creativity.'' The Boys' Brigade, Outward Bound and the Duke of Edinburgh programme are a few of the other youth organisations that will be involved in the camp.
And the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation and the Bermuda Regiment have also lent a hand thus far.
The budget for the event is $150,000 and the organisers are halfway toward reaching that goal.
Mrs. Cann said she hoped that with the potential success of the camp, "the public will be more aware of girl guiding''.
"The girls will be able to see opportunity,'' she said. "Through the diverse organisations, the girls will be introduced to different cultures and nationalities.'' She added that the event would show "young people who are doing positive things''.
Opening ceremonies will take place on July 3 at Bernard Park with an International Day and a Cultural and Heritage Celebration scheduled for July 7 and 10.
Meanwhile a fund raising fashion show will be held tomorrow (SAT).
