clampdown on drug dealing.

He told the Senate he had drawn up a list of the favourite haunts for drug taking, such as marijuana smoking.

The spread of marijuana smoke was sufficient to give even non-pot smokers a high, he claimed.

"There are some areas you drive through where you can get what is called a `contact high'.'' Sen. Scott called in particular for a clampdown on the suppliers of cannabis.

"We have to have a zero tolerance policy on drugs.'' Sen. Gary Pitman (UBP) urged Sen. Scott to hand over his list of drug-taking areas to the Police.

Sen. Scott replied: "The Police already know where this is happening.'' The Senate on Wednesday, in its last meeting before the summer recess, also touched on other social ills affecting the Island.

Sen. Yvette Swan (UBP) voiced concern at the number of physical and sexual assaults on women.

She appealed to the Police and the judiciary to take a firm stand against men who commit such crimes.

"Please do not slap these people on the back of their hands, and put them back into circulation.

"I am afraid what will happen if such a trend continues.'' Sen. Swan also spoke of the problem of youngsters losing their candy money to older children -- describing it as a "form of piracy''.

"It is not a laughing matter,'' she said.

Sen. Lynda Milligan-Whyte (UBP) made an impassioned plea for unity in Bermuda.

The problems of drugs and racism could only be solved in Bermudians pulled together.

"We are still fighting each other. Bermuda could suffer drastic economic consequences if we don't pull together.'' Sen. Milligan-Whyte said it was unfortunate Bermuda's system of Government pitted the political parties against each other.

Government Senate Leader Sen. Gerald Simons agreed, saying: "There is a need for far greater unity in the community.'' For Sen. Neletha Butterfield (PLP), Bermuda's bus service was a source of concern.

She said far too many people found themselves stranded because of the infrequency of the bus service.

Sen. Butterfield spoke of the problems in the Spanish Point area, where she lives.
