But Mrs. Gabisi challenged the media for focusing on negative events and not giving enough attention to the good work of the majority at the school.

And the chairman of the Board of Governors, Calvin White, has condemned the students involved in the lunch-hour fight which was broken up by more than 25 Police officers.

A 15-year-old St. George's boy was arrested after he allegedly picked up a pedal cycle and threw it at a teacher. A Police spokeswoman said the boy was approached as officers attempted to stop the fighting. He was cautioned before being eventually placed under arrest.

In a Press release, Mrs. Gabisi said: "The Berkeley family is saddened that the negative actions of a few students could be exaggerated so much in the media yesterday.'' She denied there was a riot at the school, and promised that the culprits will "be dealt with severely''. Mrs. Gabisi continued: "This is a very sad day because all the positive things that our students have been doing have not earned the same degree of attention from the media.'' Mrs. Gabisi said senior students were outside for lunch when the fight occurred but denied there was a confrontation between hundreds of students and Police "as reported in some stories''. She said Police were called when the situation appeared to escalate, and while she appreciated the prompt response, she was "concerned'' about the number of officers that attended.

Mr. White said the board had instructed the administration to identify those responsible and deal with them. "The Board of Governors in no way condones the recent irresponsible and violent acts of a handful of students,'' he said.

Mr. White said young people had to deal with tremendous pressures in society and the incident was "indicative of the general unrest among our youth''.

He added: "It is incumbent upon all of us to deal decisively yet sensitively with those who will lead our country in the future.''
