a chemical in their eyes. The attack happened at around 3.30 a.m. yesterday while the officers were making routine checks for drug offences on Ord Road, Paget.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said the man was being arrested when he became obstructive and a struggle began.

"The man pulled out a can of some noxious chemical and sprayed it in the officers' faces,'' said Sgt. Dale. "Both officers were temporarily blinded but they managed to put out a call for assistance. The man, a 28-year-old from Warwick, was arrested.'' The Policeman, aged 22 and 28, were treated in hospital but later discharged.

They have not been named. Sgt. Dale said it was yet known what was in the spray can, but it could have been Mace or insect spray.

A man is expected to appear in court today.
