Both people involved in a civil court case over alleged non-payment of rent were arrested last week by detectives investigating the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) scandal.

The Royal Gazette reported on Friday that sacked BHC property officer Terrence Smith was arrested by Police shortly after the Magistrates Court case brought against him by carpenter Steven Barbosa last Thursday.

The newspaper has discovered that Mr. Barbosa was also arrested after the case, although it is not known why both were detained, or the outcome.

Mr. Barbosa is suing Mr. Smith for non-payment of $22,500, which he claims the former BHC officer owes him for rent for a property in Cambridge Road, Sandys.

The court heard it was an agreed fact that Mr. Smith paid $22,300, but Mr. Barbosa's lawyer Paul Harshaw said his client contends the money was work done at Mr. Smith's house in Tee Street, Devonshire.

Mr. Smith and former BHC general manager Raymonde Dill were sacked last year following an investigation into allegations of corruption and mismanagement at the housing quango.

Commercial Crime Unit detectives are still continuing their investigation into BHC.
