The 21-year-old constable was last night recovering on a general ward at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, following the accident on Wednesday afternoon in which her knee was fractured.

She and a 27-year-old male officer were hurt but saved from serious injuries by the seatbelts they were wearing.

Police said an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.

The officers were cut free from the wreckage of the patrol car, which was totally destroyed in the collision, which happened as the vehicle overtook a line of cars on Kindley Field Road.

A 77-year-old Smith's man, who was driving the water truck eastward, was not injured.

The female officer, whose leg was pinned inside the car, suffered a fractured knee requiring immediate surgery.
