Championships but there was no stopping Paula Lewin once things got underway.

Three classes of boats competed in the Great Sound and keel boats were able to master the five-race series that were eventually held under more suitable conditions as the hours passed by.

The best competition took place in the Etchells class as Lewin and her crew of Leatrice Roman and Andy Studdiford defeated the likes of Peter Bromby and Adam Barboza.

She picked up three wins in the five races, including the last one, to remain ahead of Bromby, who nosed out Barboza for second. Lewin, who will join Bromby in the Bermuda Gold Cup next month, heads to Marblehead next week for a top-flight women's match-racing regatta.

There she will hook up with her regular crew of Roman, Peta Lewin and Carol Newman.

Jonathan Corless continued his dominance in the J-24 fleet with a near-flawless performance at the national championships, this despite being over early in one race and still battling back to a front position after having to return to the starting line.

And once again Penny Simmons excelled in the International One Design class, carrying his crew of wife Sacha, Harry Powell, Jay Hooper and Steven King to victory.

Simmons and his crew will represent Bermuda next week in Rye, New York, at the Worlds, which are being hosted by the Long Island Sound fleet.
