Bermuda Civic Ballet to stage `Sylvia'
been announced that former principal dancer of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Laurence Haider, assisted by Boston Ballet's David Drummond, will stage the classic ballet `Sylvia' in August.
Set to a sumptuous score by Delibes (composer of `Coppelia') the mythologically themed three-act work was first staged in 1876 at the Paris Opera. The most famous production is that of Frederick Ashton, choreographed for Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes in 1952.
The Civic Ballet production will once again take place in the grounds of Government House from August 20 through 23.
Civic Ballet director Coral Waddell is appealing for all dancers interested in taking part to attend auditions which will be held at the Pembroke Sunday School Hall on July 5 and 6, commencing at 4 p.m. each day. Rehearsals will begin the following Monday, July 7.
"There are parts for the young -- and the not so young,'' says Mrs. Waddell.
"And we will be needing male as well as female dancers. We also need some girls who are able to do good pointe work although that it not essential for all the parts that are available.'' For further information please telephone Mrs. Waddell at 293-4147.
