Youngsters on show before big matches

Two of the Island's national youth football teams will get a chance to showcase their skills ahead of this week's international friendlies at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Caribbean side St. Kitts and Nevis are scheduled to clash with Bermuda's senior squad tomorrow night and again on Sunday, with both fixtures to be preceded by inter-squad matches involving the Island's Under-17 and Under-13 national youth teams, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have confirmed.

Bermuda's Under-17s will see action first tomorrow night at the Sports Centre, with kick-off time set aside for 5.30 p.m.

Under-17 national coach Mark Wade, who is currently preparing his squad for upcoming Clyde Best Invitational, Dallas Cup and Under-17 World Cup qualifying commitments next year, said tomorrow's inter-squad contest will provide his youngsters with a rare opportunity to showcase their talents under the lights on the plush 'carpet'.

"This match will give the public a chance to look at these young men in a sort of non-pressure situation," the former PHC Zebras coach said.

Last month saw Under-17 team management cast their net wider in search of hidden talent while earlier this year the squad rubbed shoulders against Canadian and UK opposition in warm up matches.

"We've basically had this team for over a year now and the ultimate goal is to try and qualify for the Under-17 World Cup," Wade added.

In 2002, under the stewardship of former national coach Kenny Thompson, Bermuda's Under-17s advanced to the second round of Under-17 World Cup qualifiers before bowing out against Cuba in Havana.

Bermuda's Under-13 national squad, coached by former senior national skipper Dennis Brown, will stage their inter-squad match ahead of Sunday's second senior international.
