Handbag snatcher is jailed for three years
A 25-year-old man who tried to steal handbags from two women has been jailed for three years.Tyneko Kahlid Trott, of Southside Road, St George’s, was sentenced in Magistrates’ Court for the November 30 offences.Trott admitted in December he tried to grab the bags off Julia Smatt and Chandra Murphy-White.Ms Smatt was walking on Church Street at about 5.30pm when Trott tried to pull her bag off her shoulder.She was able to push him away.Trott tried to steal Ms Murphy-White’s handbag just minutes later on Parliament Street.Ms Murphy-White received minor injuries to her hand and shoulder as Trott struggled unsuccessfully for the bag.Police arrested him shortly afterward. At the time he was on a conditional discharge for burglary and giving a false name.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner noted a psychological report had found “nothing wrong mentally” with Trott.Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said a social inquiry report indicated Trott was a habitual offender.Trott told the court: “I just want to apologise for my actions. Given the chance to stay out of trouble, I would.”Mr Warner sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment on both counts, to run concurrently.He said: “That three-year sentence will be followed by two years’ probation, and you must be given all social, drug and other rehabilitation at the discretion of court services.”Mr Warner also denied Trott’s request for time already served in Westgate to be taken into account.
