Sorority planning big conference in 2011
The national executive board of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recently visited Bermuda in conjunction with the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter for a three-day conference.
More than 150 people gathered in the Victoria Room at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess at a welcome reception to honour members of one the largest women's organisations in the world.
The National Executive Board, led by its National President Dr. Louise Rice, were specifically visiting Bermuda to host the three days of meetings — a first for the group as their meetings are traditionally hosted within the US.
The meetings centred around hosting a larger conference in Bermuda in 2011 — the South Atlantic Regional Conference.
The Department of Tourism saw last week's conference as a critical visit which could translate into a boost in visitor numbers and as such, it rolled out the red carpet to the sorority ensure that a memorable evening was had by all.
Significant highlights of the reception included a special video greeting from Premier Ewart Brown as well as welcome remarks, from Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Paula Cox.
Additionally, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dame Jennifer Smith also gave her greetings. The visitors were also treated to a range of musical renditions from local musician extraordinaire Randy Lambert.
And rounding out the night was a heart stopping performance by the Warner Gombey Troupe, who were introduced by the Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation, Dale Butler.
According to the second vice president of the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter, Lisa Lister Currin, the event went a long way in ensuring the group's return to Bermuda.
Ms. Currin said: "Bermuda can be assured that this reception has influenced the organisation's decision to hold the 2011 South Atlantic Regional Conference in Bermuda.
"Although the purpose of this visit was to hold executive board meetings, the site team made specific use of the visit by organising an unofficial site tour of both Fairmont properties.
"This is clear evidence that a significant step forward has been made in bolstering support for future meetings, conferences and leisure travel."
Dr. Rice added that she "was sincerely impressed" by the outpouring of support from the "Bermuda Ambassadors" and was "deeply warmed" by the way Bermuda embraced the women of Delta.
